A CONCERNED local has flagged up “unsafe” construction work in Bruntsfield after seeing people jumping over a gaping hole in the ground to get past.
The work is taking place on Bruntsfield Avenue, along the route to Bruntsfield Primary School.
A picture shared shows construction works seemingly left abandoned, with signs reading “footpath closed ahead” and barriers having fallen over into the road.
The works are for an LV fault and are set to finish on 9 April, having commenced last week.
An Edinburgh local posted to social media yesterday, saying: “Scottish Power, please correct the unsafe works that have been left by your subcontractors outside Bruntsfield primary School Edinburgh this morning.
“I saw people jumping over the hole in the ground.”
The Scottish Roadworks Commissioner has raised an emergency notice for these works, as they may impact vulnerable customers.
According to Transport Scotland, this sort of emergency notice is often raised when the road works authority deems there to be a likelihood of danger to the public or serious damage to the road, resulting in a closure or restriction.
Scottish Power confirmed that there were engineers onsite following this complaint yesterday, but the local stated: “There was no one there at 3pm and the excavation was in the same condition.
“I trust it will be fixed by the morning.”
The picture shows that a path has been created as a diversion around the hole in the ground, which covers the width of the pavement.
This path, however, has been knocked down leaving the hole and nearby rubble out in the open, leading to people reportedly hopping over the gap to get past.
A spokesperson for SP Energy Networks said today: “We work with our excavation partners to ensure compliance with safety standards.
“Our partners were notified last night of the barriers having been moved.
“They visited the site to reinstate the barriers ensuring the area was secure.
“The repair work being carried out by SPEN is now complete and the backfill should be complete by this evening.”
